Is Forever Enough?

So this summer we decided to bring back an older song from our second record (Smile, It’s the End of the World), and play it live. It’s called Is Forever Enough… and we’ve never attempted to play it live before this summer. It has quickly become one of our favorite songs of the set.

Since we’re introducing 2 new songs during our summer set (Live Life Loud, and Meaning of Life), it might be easy to mistake Is Forever Enough for a brand new song…. but don’t be fooled. :) This is an oldie but a goodie.

I found a pretty decent video of this song when we performed it at Creation East festival a few days ago - hope you like it!

Little Canadian Delights

So we played Canadas Wonderland yesterday… It’s a theme park similar to a six flags, except with security that the TSA would envy. Geez… They were hardcore!

I used to come to this park quite a bit when I was a kid. I also used to come see my favorite Christian bands play here, so it was kind of special to be playing on that stage with my own band now.

My mother and aunt were there with me, and we spent some time walking around the park. It was interesting to see all the rides that has been renamed since I left. They even renamed one in my honour! At least I’m assuiming it’s in my honour…. I mean, I AM the Sledgehammer!

For lunch we went to this pizza joint called Pizza Pizza. Now, I know this photo is lame, and this place doesn’t look that special… But it is! They have DIPPING sauces for their pizza….. and if you’re an avid reader of the sidelines, then you know… I’m all about the sauces. My favorite in this case is the cheddar jalepeno. Delicious!

Of course, no trip to Canada is complete without a visit to Tim Hortons…. Or, in my case…. Three. Yes, I managed to squeeze in 3 trips to tim hortons in just over 24 hours…. Here is the final breakdown:

3 iced capps
1 boston cream donut
1 maple dip donut (how Canadian)
1 vanilla dip donut with sprinkles
1 cinnamon raisin bagel

I think I may have sinned by eating all that.

However, I did get new running shoes for my birthday (thanks honey!) so I’m going to try and run at least 3 miles a day for the next two weeks. We’ve got a little time off and I’m determined to put it to good use!

Walkabout Toronto

I lived so close to Toronto for so long…. And I never fully appreciated it for what it was. It’s an incredible city with a ton of culture, fashion, and life to it.

Today, walking around downtown with a few of my American friends… I felt like a tour guide. A really enthusiastic tour guide. Apparently, I’m quite proud of my country…. Well, this city anyway.

I showed them city hall, being sure to mention the marriage proposals that happened there, as well as the scene from Resident Evil that was filmed there….

And I also showed them the beautiful parliament buildings downtown that house the provincial government of Ontario. There is some incredibly beautiful architecture here in downtown Toronto.

I took them through the eaton’s center, and introduced them to Toronto’s downtown mall. Tyler, one of our buddies out with us, had never been to Canada before, so he was stunned by the sight of Canadian money. He called it monopoly money.

We stopped by steves music, where I used to shop for guitars and such….

Of course I visited the PRS area. Some sweet guitars in the shop now! I don’t think they had quite that many PRSes when I lived here. Good job steve!

It feels great to be back in Canada. It’s mixture of “returning home” and “visiting somewhere new” for me. Obviously I grew up here, so there’s an attachment there, but I’ve been gone for long enough that I find myself feeling a little foreign when i return.

I’m also pretty settled in Nashville… Married with a house and a dog… So it has become pretty natural to feel like that is home.

All in all, I’m loving visiting Canada…. But it’s becoming more evident as time goes on…. This is no longer home for me…. Mixed feelings about that? Yes. Regrets? Absolutely not. Excited and hopeful about the future? Inexpressibly so.

Creation East

Last night we played Creation East Festival, in Pennsylvania. This is the biggest Christian festival around, and it’s one of our favorite of the year. Roughly 70,000 were in attendance, and we got to play in an incredible slot… 9:00pm at main stage (right before Chris Tomlin). The fringe stage was shut down by that time, and the main stage area was packed full of folks ready for a great time!

We played for 50 minutes, and had SUCH a great time, introducing 2 new songs (meaning of life and live life loud) to the festival crowd. At the end of the set, Jas, Dan, and I ran down to the front of the stage to say goodbye… It was a special moment. I looked out over 70,000 people chanting the last “woah-oh-oh-oh” from live life loud, and thought….. “This is a moment I want to remember…”

I have such a cool job.

I also got to hang a lot with my friends Jack and Beverly from PRS Guitars. They were SO warm and wonderful to be around. I helped throw PRS shirts out to the crowd on the fringe stage, and assisted with a draw for a guitar giveaway after our set on main stage. I am so grateful for the friends I’ve made at PRS. They’re such great people… And they also happen to be incredibly good at what they do!

So thank you to all you folks at creation east… You made my night!

Birthday Wishes

So today is my 26th birthday, and I had such a great time celebrating yesterday. We went and saw the new star trek movie (I give it a 7 out of 10), and had some great Thai food!

The day, before, however…. was a bit of a disaster. We spent most of the day riding the bus back to Nashville from Iowa. We got back into town at 4pm…. and I ran a few errands, and went to meet Jess at her work. Once she was off work, we planned on heading out to meet some friends for a little birthday get together…. I turned the key, and NOTHING!

We tried to jump start it with Jess’s car, tried fiddling with the battery… But no luck. Finally, I resigned myself to my last option… I called a tow truck.

All this took long enough that we had to cancel the birthday plans… Bummer!

Well, as it turns out - the only thing wrong with it was that a $2 rubber stopper had broken… one that tells the car that the clutch is in, and it’s ok to start. All that trouble, towing, and time…. Over a $2 rubber stopper. Haha. Life is funny sometimes.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Eye Oh Wah

Well today we played at Risefest in Orange City, Iowa. We got to see our friends Jeremy Camp and his band…. And our buddy Matt Best, who puts on the festival.

It was a GREAT show, and we had such a good time. I think Jas spent more time in the crowd than on stage!

Now we’re on our way back home….. And it’s a long drive…. So we made a pit stop….. A filthy, guilty pit stop.

Next week we’re playing Grayson, KY, Creation East Festival in Shirleysburg, PA, and Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto, Ontario. It’s gonna be a great week!

Alive Festival

Today was SUCH a gnarly day! We played alive festival in Ohio. It rained most of the morning ( and all day yesterday ), so it was just FILTHY. Ugh.

When it was time for us to play, storm clouds rolled in, and thunder and lightning struck the festival area. It got pretty crazy… The festival had to shut down in the middle of our set. The crowd ran for shelter, leaving a giant mud pit in front of the stage!

We resumed about 20 minutes later….. And the crowd was SO FUN! We came back and played You Have What I Need, Friend Like That, Let’s Dance, and a brand new song called Live Life Loud.

We’re enjoying playing 2 new songs at the festivals this summer…. It’s funny… Live Life Loud is a brand new song, but everyone seems to be enjoying it so much, we’re already closing with it…. And the record’s not even out yet!

We had such a good time in Ohio, and we can’t wait to come back…. Now, a 900 mile drive to Iowa for risefest!

Live Life Loud Photo Shoot

Over the last two days we’ve been shooting photos for our new album, Live Life Loud….. and this is EASILY the most elaborate, most fun, and most over-the-top photo shoot we’ve ever done.

Not to mention, the whole thing was shot in 3D!

Here are some fun moments from the day:

This is how we shot 3D.

The record is finished being recorded….. and the photos are done. We’re getting a lot closer to releasing this record. We are SO excited about it, and can’t wait to share it with you!

New Summer EP!!!

Last night we played Ichthus Festival in Kentucky…. We had SUCH a great time. I think this festival season is going to be a ton of fun…. Last night was also the first time THIS was available…

Our brand new Summer EP…. Here’s the track listing:

1. Live Life Loud

2. Let’s Dance (Dojo Dominating Remix)

3. Don’t You (Forget About Me)

4. Meaning of Life

So, it contains 2 brand new songs, 1 remix, and 1 cover… and as of right now, it is available only at our live shows over the summer. We’re also enjoying playing BOTH these brand new songs at festivals over the summer…. They’re called “Live Life Loud”, and “Meaning of Life”. Incidentally, Live Life Loud is also the name of our brand new record that comes out this fall. Yes!

So, back to Ichthus….

The weather all day was pretty nasty…. Which seems to be the case every year at Ichthus. I do remember an incident about 4 years ago…. A tornado touched down in the vicinity of the festival, and everybody was running to their vehicles for shelter. We crammed about 25 people on our bus, and waited out the storm. It was pretty intense. I also remember buying rubber boots and an umbrella, and spray-painting a skull and crossbones on each of them. What I would do for a picture of THAT now!

We’ve got a quick day off at home today, and tonight we are headed to Charlotte, NC, for Sonfest at Carowinds….. Looking forward to a great show tomorrow night!

Cheers to Mr. Superfluous

So, Green Day performed on Conan last week, and something was odd about the performance.

(Yes, I know it was on last week and I’m late to the punch here… I know. I watched the performance today on NBC.com as I was scrolling through some of Conan’s first-week guests. )

Here’s the thing… aside from the song being pretty darn boring, “Do you know your enemy? No, Do you? Are you sure? Let me ask you again…” There was a guy on stage, off to the side of Mike Dirnt (bass player), who was just sort of singing background vocals…

Am I the only one who thinks this is totally random and bizarre? I mean, here you have a guy who’s all glammed up in a leather jacket and guyliner, hair straighted, rocking the “singer stance”… as he’s tucked into the back next to the bass cabinets. It’s almost as if the band couldn’t decide whether they wanted him singing on-stage, or off-stage… so they placed him in no-man’s land.

Wait, does he kinda look like a glammed-up Jeremy Camp?!

In any case…. Cheers to you…. Mr. Superfluous…. You got to play Conan, and that’s something I still haven’t gotten to do yet.

Then again, when you show people the performance you will have to say…

“Wait for it…………. THERE I AM! Ok wait….. OH THERE I AM! THAT’S ME!”

Sidelines Chat

Guys.

The chatroll thing is supposed to be a way people can get together and have fun chatting. If you’re on here, pretending to be someone you’re not, that may be fun for you… but it’s not for everyone else.

I don’t know who’s pretending to be who, and I’m not gonna bother trying to figure that out… But I do remember someone pretending to be Jason when he was standing right next to me, so I know some people are full of it.

If this kind of thing keeps happening, then I’ll most likely just shut the chat down entirely… so unless you want to ruin it for everyone…. Let’s cut it out, shall we?

Cult of Apple

I don’t know what it is about Apple that makes people crazy…. but at this point I think most of us can agree that something about Apple really does make people CRAZY! (I should have included my iPhone in this picture…. Why didn’t I think of that?!)

Today Apple is doing one of their big keynote speeches (they do 2 a year) announcing some new products…. Along with the confirmed new iPhone software (3.0), a new version of the iPhone is expected. Somehow I get the feeling that I’m gonna want the new one, even though I don’t know why yet…. AND even though I just got my iPhone 3G a few short months ago.

I consider myself firmly on the fence when it comes to the cult of Apple. While I’m glued to my computer when they’re announcing new products, I don’t usually buy something until it’s been out a year or so. While I love getting new apple stuff, I generally buy used. I guess you could call me a “pragmatic fanatic”. What a good term! I just made that up…. maybe i should do this:

Pragmatic Fanatic © Jonathan Steingard 2009

That’s all you need for a copyright, yes?

AAAAnnnnnyways…. My predictions for today’s Keynote:

1. New version of iPhone. Still 3G, but faster, more multitasking, better camera, and video.
2. Sneak peak into Snow Leopard, the New OS X, possibly a release date.
3. Release of iPhone OS 3.0.
4. Some sort of new announcement regarding the budget Macbook line.
5. Surprise appearance by Steve Jobs himself!

Bring it On, Apple!

Long and Lonely Road

This summer marks 5 years since I started playing with Hawk Nelson. Wow. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long… but it does make sense. A lot has happened in that 5 years.

I was 20 when my friends Jas, Dan, Davin, and Matt signed a record deal and began touring. I remember getting a pre-release listen to the first record, “Letters to the President”, and being incredibly proud of the guys for how that record turned out. It sounded like a band on its way to a real career, which is something that so many of us in the Southern Ontario music scene wanted.

For all of us in other Ontario bands, it was a mixed bag of pride and envy. We were very proud of our friends in HN, but we all felt a twinge of jealousy when we watched them fly out to Seattle to record, or hit the road on a big US tour.

Nobody could say they didn’t deserve it though…. I’m not sure how many people know this, but the 4 original hawk boys practiced 5 days a week (mon-fri) from 5pm-9pm or so. They spent unbelievable amounts of time working on songs, making plans, booking shows, and promoting themselves online. Not only that, but they worked jobs and contributed to the band when expenses came up. They worked incredibly hard.

Just prior to the release of “Letters”, Daniel asked if I could fill in for Dave for a few shows in July, as he was getting married. I gladly agreed, and played 2 shows…. the first in Omaha, Nebraska, at a venue called “The Rock”, and the second in Berwyn, Illinois (don’t remember the name of the venue). These shows were small, but incredibly fun. I had the time of my life, but I took it with a grain of salt, knowing that I was just filling in for a few shows. I had no idea that I would become a permanent fixture in the band…. so remembering these two specific shows is somewhat special for me.

The next week, Letters to the President was released, and the HN boys set off to play some of the summer festivals.

Several months later, I was again asked to fill in for Dave, at a show in Little Rock, Arkansas. I was to fly down, play the show, and fly home. As it turns out, I never ended up flying home. Haha. I stayed on with the band, and finished out the rest of the tour they were doing with Sanctus Real and Seven Places. I have a ton of great memories from that tour as well.

We took a break for Christmas, and returned in January to do a second leg of the Sanctus Tour. In February and March we did a tour called the X Tour, with Falling Up, KJ52, and a few others.

It was in March of 2005 that we got a really exciting opportunity… our first A-level tour. We got the opening slot on the 2005 Diverse City Worldwide Tour, featuring Audio Adrenaline, Tobymac, Kutless, and ourselves. It was such an incredible opportunity, and we were incredibly excited about it. A few of us (Jas and I mostly) had grown up on Christian music, and Audio Adrenaline and DC Talk were some of our first tapes as kids… so it was a special tour for us.

We filmed several little LIVE videos on this tour, and I came across some of the videos we filmed this week. Many of these I remember, but I found one that I didn’t remember at all! It’s a live (read: VERY live) version of Long and Lonely Road. I hope you enjoy it!

p.s. for you gear nerds…. I got that tone out of a standard TELE and an AC-30… still don’t quite remember how I did that?!

Oh, and on that same tour… THIS happened.

Hope you enjoyed my little trip down memory lane… I sure did. Oh, if anyone was at either of those first 2 shows in 2004…. in Omaha or Berwyn.. email me and let me know. That would be fun! It could be even better if you have photos! How embarassing!

j.

Ahhhh Yes… a few people have written to remind me that I also filled in at Lifest in 2004…. so that makes 3 shows that month. My memory is fading!
